Villa 5-0 Liverpool. Dec 17th.

Yes I’ll say that again, Villa 5-0 Liverpool, it’s not often you get the chance. There were extenuating circumstances for sure but you can’t knock a royal hammering of Liverpool, we’ll take that all day long. Not since the mid 70s have we stuffed five goals past them at Villa Park and it was a joy to behold. However, this is why...

Liverpool fielded their youth team, their under 23s, because their first team proper were playing in the World Club finals the following day and had decided that that affair took precedence over our League Cup quarter final encounter. Fair enough I suppose, and given they did indeed go on to win the World Club final you have to say their decision was vindicated, so all’s well that ends well, they win another trophy and we progress to the semi-finals.

It was 4-0 by halftime, all scored in front of the Holte End which gives you a spring in your step. Goals up the other end are more than acceptable, provided they’re scored by claret and blue shirts, but goals in front of the Holte feel that bit more special since the Holte End is Villa Park’s spiritual home. The first was a deflection, the second an own goal but beggars can’t be choosers and a youthful Liverpool side weren’t going to recover from two down after seventeen minutes. Kodja scored twice more before the break and Wesley came on to score with the last kick of the match, he needed that to boost his dwindling if nonexistent confidence, he’s had a rotten debut season so far.

So it’s Leicester in the semis, away first leg, Villa Park second. Let’s just hope we’re still in the tie when we bring them back to B6, if we play like we did against Leicester last week we might as well give them a bye.
