Villa 1-0 Norwich City. Dec 26th.

Let’s not be churlish, this was a vital win and the nature of it shouldn’t really matter, it was all about achieving three points...however...our performance was once again woeful and Norwich will be kicking themselves all the way back to carrot land. They had many more chances than us to score, Heaton making two incredible saves and Luiz performing a remarkable goal line clearance, meanwhile we achieved one single shot on target, which, mercifully, went in.

Without Jack Grealish we would be toast, no question. He carried us yet again today, laying on the winner beautifully for Hourihane who converted splendidly having only just come on in place of an out of sorts Nakumba. Grealish is our out ball every time, his teammates seek him out wherever they are on the pitch and who can blame them? The ball seems likes it’s tied to his bootlaces sometimes, he carries it with confidence, seldom losing possession, drawing fouls, scoring goals and spearheading the team he captains. He’s our everything right now and only Heaton gets anywhere near rivalling him in terms of importance to the team.

Wesley huffed and puffed, El Ghazi too, neither looking like a football pitch was where they wanted to be this Boxing Day. Targett was constantly beaten for pace and skill by Norwich’s winger, Nakumba had one of those days when everything he touched went wrong, I could go on. However, Hourihane scored a splendid goal and we managed to fluke our way to a clean sheet so let’s be glad of this small mercy; three points and a narrowing of the gap (one point) for us to escape the relegation zone. More performances like this though and make no mistake, we’re down.
