Chelsea 2-1 Villa. Dec 4th.

The hope was that we’d follow our creditable draw at Old Trafford with at least a point at Chelsea but this was not to be, a good performance yes, but no reward.

Predictably, former striker Tammy Abraham notched against us, a powerful close range header, a free one sad to say, but we equalised just before halftime with a scrambled effort by Trezeguet, a goal our efforts deserved. The second half saw us spurn chances with half hearted and inaccurate shots and we were made to pay for such profligacy when they scored what turned out to be the winner, a cracking shot drilled in from outside of the box. We had an 89th minute header turned on to the post and that was our last chance to get something out of the game. I’m not gonna criticise, we played well away from home against formidable opposition and a 2-1 defeat was no disgrace, it just leaves us tantalisingly close to the drop zone and needing to accumulate points over Christmas if we’re to start the New Year without a sense of panic.

John Terry was wildly applauded by the Chelsea crowd, the least his career there deserved, and he himself clapped all sides of the ground. I’ve no problem with that, I love it when Villa supporters receive ex-heroes in similar fashion so can’t complain when other clubs welcome back their idols.

Leicester at home next, that used to be a gimme, but not these days.
