Villa 2-1 Watford. Jan 21st.

Joy unconfined at Villa Park tonight as Villa a) won, b) won against fellow relegation candidates, c) rubbed Bluenose Troy Deeney’s beak in it and d) scored the winner with literally the last kick of the match. Beautiful on all counts.

Watford looked like creating a four point lead over us with twenty minutes left and who knows what that’d have done to our confidence, but we’re showing some genuine fight lately and somehow stole the game.

Watford’s centre forward is the inimitable Troy Deeney, an old fashioned striker, brought up in Birmingham and a supporter of the city’s second biggest team. He’s revered by Blues fans and considered a pantomime villain by us, he has a horrible habit of netting against the Villa. Tonight he notched his sixth in four games against us, in front of the Holte End where he wasn’t shy in reminding us where his loyalties lay. I don’t blame him, any Villa fan would do the same if they scored at St Andrews, but it’s galling nonetheless. I wish we had a Troy Deeney, a battering ram of a striker with a good goal scoring record, but I doubt he’d be persuaded to join us for all the tea in China.

He was denied a second on the hour mark thanks to a super save by Reina, fast becoming a fans’ favourite. This gave us some confidence and we started to threaten Watford’s goal without creating clear cut chances until a Targett shot was saved and the loose ball converted from close range by Luiz, 1-1.

The game seemed to be petering out to a draw when in the 95th minute, with ten seconds left on the clock, a hopeful punt into their box saw the ball break to Konsa who hammered it into the net with a deflection off Mings’ heel as he lay prostrate on the ground. The ground went wild, Deeney went quiet, Villa went out of the relegation zone, leapfrogging Watford. Boy we needed this, next up it’s Bournemouth.
