Brighton 1-3 Villa. Sep 25th.

It was egg on face time for Villa supporters like me last night, those of us so apoplectic after Sunday’s defeat that we were ready to throw in the towel. Three days later and we pitch up at Brighton, turn them over 3-1 and all is right with the world once again. Or is it? League cup wins are pleasant asides to the main event really, a diversion from the serious business of the Premier League, but it’d be churlish not to take satisfaction in our progression to the next round.

Jota scored his first for Villa, Hourihane notched too and Grealish polished off the victory, a good one away from home. We’ve drawn Wolves in the next round, at home, so have started to dream of cup glory but if that’s at the cost of Premiership improvement I’m not sure I want it. We mustn’t take our eyes off the ball, cup wins offer a good night out and a warm, fuzzy feeling, but it’s points on the board that matter, that’s the long and short of it.

As contrition goes that’s probably a lame effort, well done Villa for in part atoning for the Arsenal surrender but I repeat, the real business is at the weekend, we need three points against Burnley before full restitution is made. Meanwhile, enjoy the highlights...
