Crewe 1-6 Villa. Aug 27th

It was an away trip to Crewe Alexandra in the League Cup tonight with folk trotting out the ‘potential banana skin’ line. Not a bit of it, we crushed Crewe 6-1 and the only link I could find to a banana skin was the impossible tightness of our players’ shirts as they squeezed themselves into tops that looked like a second skin. Years ago footballers wore shirts that flapped around like flags on a windy day, nowadays they look like their shirts have been painted on.

There was an arrogant swagger to us tonight as each goal went in. The first after four minutes was celebrated with some gusto by the players, the second less so and beyond that our scoring was greeted by a nonchalant shrug of the shoulders until finally our sixth (Grealish) wasn’t celebrated at all. We were too cool for school but I’m not complaining, it’s beautiful seeing your team coast through a football match for a change instead of panting like sweltering dogs until the 90th minute.

6-1 was a result deserving given our domination and took us into a next round draw away at Brighton, not your first choice fixture but at least we’ll be away at a team called Albion that doesn’t make us feel nauseas. Here’s those six goals in full...
