Norwich 1-5 Villa. Oct 5th.

No that’s not a misprint, we really did win 5-1 away at Norwich, as emphatic an away victory as you can get, and as surprising too. The last time Norwich played at home they despatched current league champions Man City, so we weren’t playing a bunch of mugs, but Villa stepped up and demolished their hosts spectacularly. None of us expected this, but all of us were happy to take it.

The first two goals came from our beleaguered centre forward, Wesley, who’d been receiving pelters for his recent performances, not least from me. He controlled a high cross to turn and score from close range then side footed from inside the six yard box for his second, ‘striker’s’ goals both of them. He had a penalty saved or would have earned a hat trick but we’ll forgive him for that given Grealish, Hourihane and Luiz notched further goals, each of them pearlers. Hourihane has a wand of a left foot sometimes, matched by Luiz’s right, and both scored splendid long range goals either side of Grealish’s controlled finish. Five goals away from home is quite a feat, we were positively spoiled by the quality of three of them.

A keystone kops routine between Mings and keeper Heaton gifted Norwich a late consolation and it was amusing to see their scorer retrieving the ball hurriedly before sprinting back to the halfway line in a ‘come on boys we can do this’ kinda manner. Well his admirable yet futile defiance was ended two minutes later when the ref blew the final whistle to signal Villa celebrations of a highly entertaining, and hugely unexpected victory, perfect timing ahead of (yet another) international break.
